About Acne Injections

Intralesional corticosteroid injections are used to treat deep papules, nodule or cysts. A very dilute corticosteroid is injected directly into the blemish. The steroid injection uses a small painless needle and will be able to deliver very quick and effective results. The injection will be able to reduce the inflammation of the breakout and will often clear the infected area in 1-5 days. The Corticosteroid injections also lessen the chance of developing scars, which is especially important for people who are prone to developing hyperpigmentation and pitted scarring after a breakout. Corticosteroid injections are also used to help shrink scars.
Effective and Fast Acting
Intralesional Kenalog (triamcinolone acetonide) injections have been used in dermatology for decades to treat large, inflamed acne cysts and nodules. A foundational 1983 study by Levine and Rasmussen, published in Archives of Dermatology, found that triamcinolone significantly improved cystic acne lesions within three to seven days of injection. More recent research, including a 2025 study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment, confirmed that intralesional triamcinolone safely reduces inflammation, swelling, and pain in cystic acne, often clearing lesions within days. The treatment is widely recommended for stubborn cysts that don’t respond to topical or oral medications.

What Type Of Acne Is Kenalog Injections Meant For?
Kenalog injections are specifically used to treat the onset of nodules and cysts caused by acne. They are not meant to work as a preventative measure for acne breakouts and should not be considered a maintenance treatment for the condition. However, patients who want or need a quick treatment before a major life event will find kenalog injections to be a fast option for reducing swelling and the appearance of the pimple.
How Do Kenalog Injections Work?
Kenalog contain the active ingredient Triamcinolone, which is a medication with strong anti-inflammatory properties. The medication is injected directly into the acne pimple, reducing redness and inflammation while flattening out the lesion. Healing of the area begins almost immediately.
What Can I Expect Post Treatment And Are There Any Side Effects?
Kenalog significantly reduce the appearance of a cyst or nodule within 2-4 days. Rare side effects include depression at the cyst site or hypopigmentation in dark-skinned individuals. The treatments will eliminate the cyst or nodule, although new pimples can appear over time.
Do Acne Injections Prevent Scarring?
Kenalog injections may decrease the risk of acne scarring but generally it does not prevent acne scars. Those who have severe acne are likely to develop scars post inflammation from acne.
